The SCORE Veterans Committee in San Diego provides education and mentoring guidance to the Public Interest News Network, a small business development project of Helping Communities Work and focused on public interest communications and publishing. SCORE and the US Small Business Administration are also the focus of a developing public interest storyline.

The Council on Foundations and the Center for Public Interest Communications at the University of Florida have published an insightful study on public interest communications and philanthropy.
Public Interest News Network has roots in a webinar hosted by the Council on Foundations in January of 2023. The event featured Miguel Cardona, Secretary of the United States Department of Education, and focused on ways to establish stronger alliances between the US Department of Education and the philanthropic community.
